Global Day of Creative Action, Artivists UNITE!!!

The Occupy movement’s Global Day of Creative  Action is waving its freak flag here in the City of Rochester at the Flying Squirrel Community Space on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Occupy Rochester’s Artivism working group is planning an interactive and informative event in which art, of all shapes and forms, can be shared, expressed and evolved throughout the city of Rochester and within socio-economic movements as they arise.

The festivities will be taking place from noon to 4pm and will include, but not limited to, a silent art show exhibition (of all forms,) trading circles (bring clothes, books, art, jewelry, fabric, anything & everything,) a poetry open mic slam (bring your work,) literature and great speech reading (bring an excerpt of your choice,) sign culture teach-ins and painting, creation stations, open discussions, acoustic and local music, and on site silk screening, so bring a shirt! Artivism will be followed by another local event, bringing poetry, music and more funk from 4:30 to 9pm.

Artivism is a portmanteau, which combines both expressions of “art” and “activism” as a way of communicating through various creative mediums in order to bring awareness to the need for social, political, and environmental change. Author and artist, M.K. Asante Jr. writes:

“The artivist uses her artistic talents to fight and struggle against injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation.”

This is the concept that Occupy Rochester’s Artivism working group hopes to embody. Starting with the Global Day of Creative Action, we hope to kick start a community of local artists and activists who are seeking to take direct action against injustice and combat the suppression of the imagination. We want to make the message clear that we will no longer be silenced or subdued by working to bring life and beauty back to the City of Rochester.

We are asking you, community members and local artists, to bring YOUR artwork to share, poetry to read, stuff to trade, shirts to print, and music to make. We can’t support the growth of a new collaborative community without active participation.

This is an open invitation. Spread the word and bring your creative juices, your spoken word, your instruments, your dancing legs, all of your friends and join us on Sunday, February 12 at the Flying Squirrel on 285 Clarissa Street in the Corn Hill district.

TODAY IS SOLIDARITY SUNDAY!

I am calling for a protest today in Solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the other Occupations. We meet at Washington Square Park tonight at 6:30 and we march to the Liberty Pole where we will denounce the actions of the OPD against the Oakland Occupation. We need to make people aware of what is going on immediately! We will be at the Liberty Pole at 7:00pm EST showing support and Solidarity.

In response to the brutal police repression in Oakland yesterday
(including tear-gas, “flash” grenades, projectiles, mass arrests, and
a pregnant woman hit in the belly by a policeman’s baton) direct
action working groups from at least Occupy Wall St, Occupy Boston, and
Occupy Philly, have stayed up late to craft a massive coordinated
response. Here are the initial results:

Tweet about it with #solidaritysunday and/or #J29.

Here’s a draft messaging statement prepared by Occupiers from these
various cities (working collaboratively on etherpad, of course):

Yesterday, Occupy Oakland moved to convert a vacant building into a
community center to provide education, medical, and housing services
for the 99%. Police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, beanbag
rounds, and mass arrests. The state has compounded its policy of
callous indifference with a ruthless display of violent repression.
The Occupy movement will respond, as we have always responded: with an
overwhelming show of collective resistance.

Today, January 29, we take to the streets. J29. Across the country, we
will demonstrate our resolve to overcome repression and continue to
build a better world grounded in love and solidarity for one another.
We will tell our country, the world, and our cities: another world is
possible and we will not stand for violent repression from the state
and the police.

All eyes on all Occupies.

Be creative! Be agile! BE ORGANIZED!

Occupy Rochester’s Statement Against SOPA

Statement Against SOPA

We, the 99%, call upon our elected representatives to oppose
censorship, and reject the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP
Act.

SOPA and the Protect IP Act would make it possible for the federal
government and judges to censor content on the Internet. The
government would be given the power to block access to websites and to
put websites on a DNS blacklist. Potentially, anything from Facebook
to your friend’s blog could be shut down for possible “copyright
infringement.” If SOPA becomes law, posting a video with any kind of
copyrighted material could be considered a felony.

Civil rights groups, leading technology companies, and hundreds of law
professors and lawyers oppose SOPA and the Protect IP Act. They
recognize that these bills threaten to break the internet’s
infrastructure and stifle the rights of people to freely express
themselves. We know multinational corporations have spent lots of
money lobbying our representatives to pass this legislation –
legislation that is clearly counter to the interests of the 99%.

Over the last decade, digital information networks have made it
possible for people around the world to communicate with each other
more freely than ever before. We have begun to truly realize our
shared humanity. But, the technology that has helped make this
possible is not yet under our control. So far, that infrastructure has
been operated with an eye toward liberty and justice; but, now we find
that our rights to privacy, assembly, and speech in cyberspace are
under attack.

We, the Rochester General Assembly of #OccupyRochester, recognize the
critical importance of a free and open internet. The openness of the
internet and our right to free speech is threatened by SOPA and
Protect IP. They must be stopped.

Occupy Rochester Welcomes Autistic Child into Encampment to Raise Awareness

Contact: John Smigle – 585-353-6397

Occupy Rochester has adopted into the family, one of their members’ Autistic children. Christopher Smigle will appear at the Occupy Rochester encampment at Washington Square Park on January 11th to help spread the message of the Occupation to other children and to raise awareness about autism and related medical conditions.

Christopher Smigle, whose father John works with Occupy Rochester and is a crucial part of the permanent encampment in Washington Square Park, was diagnosed with autism at a young age. Christopher has visited the encampment with his father many times since Occupy Rochester began. He particulary enjoys watching himself on our LiveStream Channel, whose videos are stored online for future playback.

On January 4th, Christopher had surgery for his Amblyopia, (commonly referred to as lazy eye). Occupy Rochester responded by signing a “Get Well” card at a recent General Assembly. The day of the surgery, John broad casted Christopher’s progress via txt message to Occupy Rochester members a list of people who wanted to be alerted of Christopher’s condition.

Occupy Rochester agrees that its crucial to raise awareness of Autism and similar conditions in order to challenge the stereotypes and social stigma still associated with these medical conditions.

Christopher will appear at the Occupy Rochester encampment at Washington Square Park on January 11th to help spread the message of the Occupation to other children who may come there on that day with their parents. January 11th is the anniversary of Occupy Rochester’s agreement with Mayor Richards, an agreement expected to be renewed that day.

Proposal for OWS Movement Building Road Trip

Proposal for OWS Movement Building Road Trip
Prepared by Direct Action in consultation with Movement Building, Facilitation, Outreach, Education and Empowerment, PR, Media, Livestream, & Training

OBJECTIVES
(1) Strengthen the OWS network by deepening relationships between occupiers
(2) Increase OWS’s capacity through mutual transfer of skills and knowledge
(3) Clarify OWS’s narrative by deepening its commitment to listening

PROGRAMMING
For each stop, planners from OWS and the host city will work to craft an itinerary that most productively facilitates bonding and knowledge transfer between occupations. The precise programming will vary from city to city according to the needs and desires of the planners. A suggested baseline for each planning team to work off of is as follows:

- Welcoming Dinner: open unstructured time for people to get to know each other and build informal relationships
- Working Group Meet and Greets: loosely structured times for occupiers to meet occupiers from corresponding working groups in different cities
- Skill Shares: structured dialogue in which occupations can learn from each others experience deploying a range of tactics, including: facilitation, anti-opression, non-violent direct action, media, livestreaming/social media, town planning, DIY/dumpstering
- Visioning Session: open space discussion to develop a shared understanding of strategic approaches to big picture issues such as: engaging surrounding communities, media strategy, dealing with police repression, displacement and re-occupation, growth strategies, diversity/anti-opression)
- Learn-ins: open forums in which community members share their experience dealing with relevant issues shared by both cities, possibly to include input from local “experts” but to be structured in a horizontal way and encourage discussion of experience rather than theorization about structure or facts
- Joint Direct Action: All participants participate in an action focused on a local campaign. This could involve plugging into a pre-existing action or working together to plan an action from start to finish
- Joint GA: Held on the last day to synthesize experience and bring in surrounding community
- Closing Party: Dance and have fun!

PROPOSED SCHEDULE:
2/1 – 2/7: Boston, Albany
2/8 – 2/14: Ithaca, Syracuse
2/15 – 2/21: Rochester, Buffalo
2/22 – 2/28: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia

Planning: For each stop, a planning team consisting of two people from NYC and two people from the host city will work to coordinate logistics for the visit, including (among other things): food, housing, event scheduling, venue procurement, intra-occupation and community outreach, and other support needs. We will use the interocc network to facilitate this planning process, but NYC is encourage to select bottomliners with pre-existing personal relationships to organizers and community members in the host city.

Slots: There will be two busses with capacity to transport and – if necessary – sleep at least 30 people. Slots will be apportioned by consensus among sponsoring working groups from within the following groups: Movement Building, Direct Action, Outreach, Facilitation, Training, Media++ (PR, Media, Livestream, Social Media), Education and Empowerment, Caucus members, Support (Legal, Food, Medics), Occupiers from other cities we pick up along the way

Shifts: NYC occupiers will be able to participate in 1-week shifts, with a 2-week limit. We will seek to create overlapping shifts so that people can share knowledge gained on the previous week’s shift with those coming on board for the following week. One of the two busses will be used to shuttle people between NYC and destination cities at the end of each weekly shift.

BUDGET:
The budget will be determined by consensus among sponsoring working groups, subject to approval by the General Assembly. Direct Action proposes a $15,000 budget, with the following buckets:
Bus Rental and insurance: $3,050
Bus maintenance: ?
Biodiesel fuel: ?
Food: ?
Housing: ?
Workshop materials: ?
Art supplies: ?
Media supplies: ?
Action and outreach materials: ?
IMMEDIATE NEXT STEPS:
This proposal will be revised and consensed upon by a spokes council of sponsoring working groups. It will then be taken back to each working group for consensus and – if necessary – subjected to final revision by a second spokes. Upon ratification by the spokes, the final proposal will be submitted to GA with the goal of passing the budget before Dec. 31. Selection of city bottomliners and outreach to destination cities will commence immediately.
